Profile | Translation excerpts | Bibliography

Janice Caiafa was born on April 13, 1958, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1980 she graduated in Psychology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro [Federal University of Rio de Janeiro] and in 1985 she obtained an MA in Social Anthropology from the same university. She took her PhD in Anthropology at Cornell University (USA) in 1991 and did her Postdoctorate in Anthropology at the University of New York, 1999. Caiafa is a poet, anthropologist, and professor at UFRJ’s Escola de Comunicação.

Her areas of interest are urban anthropology, communication theory, ethnographic research and writing, and cultural studies. For several years Janice Caiafa has been researching public transport problems in cities, occupation of urban spaces, and urban communication processes. She is currently undertaking a CNPq financed survey of Rio de Janeiro’s metro system.

She is familiar with English, French, Italian, and Russian, although she only translates from English and French. She learned all these languages studying in Brazil. She also learned Spanish when she lived in New York and was doing field research for her doctorate.

In addition to literary works, she also translates academic texts. She says that she chooses the works she translates according to her evaluation, her desire to see the work in Portuguese, and the work’s expressivity. She has approached translation matters in articles, in the book Nosso Século XXI, and in the preface to the book As Rosas.
