Dorothée de Bruchard

Profile | Translation excerpts | Bibliography

Dorothée de Bruchard was born on 15 of October 1958 in Porto Alegre to French parents, and has spent most of her life in Brazil. She lived in France between 1968 and 1969, and between 1978 and 1980, and in England from 1988 to 1991. She also spent five months in Portugal in 1992. She has a Diplôme de Langue et Littérature Françaises (Nancy III) from the Aliança Francesa de Porto Alegre. In 1988 she graduated in French and Portuguese language and literature from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina and she completed her Masters in Comparative Literature at Nottingham University, England in 1991.

She has been a French teacher and a bilingual secretary in both Brazil and France, and is currently a translator and editor, as well as working on graphic design projects. She has translated from English, but professionally only translates from French. She has also studied English, Spanish and Italian.

Between 1992 and 2000, she was head of Editora Paraula, a small publishing company dedicated to publishing bilingual classics, first in Porto Alegre and then in Florianópolis. Although it published a few titles in Portuguese, Paraula’s aim was to publish carefully revised translations, and as the company did not acquire the copyright to the translations this meant they continued to be the property of the translators, thus giving greater value to translators’ work. Paraula published 26 bilingual and trilingual titles, and one multilingual work, and included works by Schopenhauer, Swift, Maupassant, Baudelaire, Rousseau, Mallarmé, Proust, Poe and Kafka. Dorothée translated several of the titles and others were made in “translation workshops” that she organized. She was also responsible for the careful revision of each translation. Dorothée only began to translate regularly for other publishing houses after Paraula closed.

She has translated around 20 books, two from Portuguese to French, as well as numerous articles. Her most significant translations are Baudelaire’s Pequenos poemas em prosa; Marcel Schwob’s A Cruzada das crianças, and Morravagin by Blaise Cendrars.

As she is bilingual, translation has always played an important part in her life. Her first translations were two comic books for L&PM in 1982. In addition to literary translations, Dorothée translates essays, academic articles, theses, film subtitles and graphic novels among other media.

She is the founder of the Escritório do Livro [Book Office], a small non-profit making organization dedicated to books, and which has published several books. Its website is www.escritoriodolivro.org.br. She has also edited the books Memória de Tradutora [A Translator’s Memoir] by Rosa Freire d'Aguiar and Memórias de um tradutor de poesia [Memoirs of a Poetry Translator] by Geraldo de Holanda Cavalcanti in conjunction with the Núcleo de Tradução da UFSC [UFSC Translation research group].

Poem "Enivrez-vous" by Charles Baudelaire. Translation by Dorothée de Bruchard
