Born in São Paulo in 1953, Ana Maria Carlos graduated in Language and Literature from USP, where she also did her MA in Literary Theory with a dissertation on the Italian writer Dino Buzzati entitled O estilhaçamento da Moderna Babilônia: um estudo sobre o conceito de ruptura em "A queda da Baliverna", de Dino Buzzat, and her PhD in Comparative Literature with a thesis on another Italian writer Ermanno Cavazzioni; No limite do labirinto: Ermanno Cavazzoni e o fim da modernidade.
She began translating through the influence of her MA adviser, Aurora Fornoni Bernardini.
Ana Maria translates only from Italian into Portuguese. As an expert on Italian literature, she regularly writes about the writers and the works she translates. In addition to being a translator, Ana Maria is also professor of Italian literature at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in the town of Assis.
